Nexus Tutoring

What is Nexus Tutoring?

Nexus Tutoring is a subsidized tutoring program dedicated to connecting university undergrads, alumni and young professionals with high school students in order to support their academic pursuits. Each tutor will be equipped with supplementary material to support the teacher’s curriculum. Feedback will also be given to both the teacher and parent articulating both the strengths and weaknesses of the student.

The Subsidy:

All costs are borne by the organization except for $6/hr by the parent or student. This amounts to over a 70% subsidy.

The Subjects Covered:

To this point, our program covers both elementary and junior high school level french and mathematics.

Qualifications of the Tutor:

Each tutor is handpicked through a comprehensive screening process which includes:

  • A criminal record back check
  • An interview that will test both the ability of the tutor to understand and solve related problems and their ability to articulate the answer in several perspectives.

The Recruitment Process:

Sourcing of Tutors:

University honour societies (focus on Concordia and McGill); university job forums; online branding; online and print classifieds; and internal sourcing.

Phase 1 Screening:

Candidates will use the Nexus Core to upload their resume and cover letter. The primary pre-screening selection criteria is the candidate’s academic achievement. This, as well as, the secondary criteria are listed below:

Extra curriculum involvement based on:

  • Past tutoring/teaching experiences
  • Past mentorship experiences
  • Involvement in any leadership development programs

Other Assets:

  • Leadership: Able to motivate self and others in order to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Self-Management: Works autonomously within established parameters, identifies relevant issues, and communicates them effectively to supervisors.
  • Creativity & Innovation: Develops new methods or adapts existing ideas to help achieve desired results. Calls status quo into question in order to find more effective methods.
  • Integrity: Behaves responsibly at all times and adheres to high ethical standards.
  • Problem-solving: Identifies issues, gathers and processes relevant information, finds possible solutions, and implements appropriate action.
  • Teamwork: Actively participates in teamwork to ensure maximum organizational effectiveness.

Phase 2 Screening:

Pre-interview preparation:

A choice of 3 monthly alternating mathematical/french language questions are submitted for the candidate. They must select one of the three possible questions and will have 3 days in order to prepare a solution for the interview.

Interview Process:

Once a date and time has been setup with a HR executive and the candidate, the candidate must present which problem they chose and communicate the solution via video conference. The interviewer will judge the tutors’ ability to effectively communicate the answer to the selected problem. There will also be one or two follow up questions in order to assess the candidate’s capacity to answer them appropriately.

Post Screening Process:

Prior to offering employment to the tutor we must determine that they have a pristine criminal record, void of any civil disobediences, fraud, deceit or other criminal acts. We have signed an exclusive agreement with RecordCheck in order to efficiently process this requirement.

Additional Products & Services

The student and tutor will have access to an online relationship manager called the Nexus Core. The relationship management tool is used to assure both tutor and student meet frequently and allow for both parties to divulge feedback on their experience. Moreover, Nexus Core allows parents/guardians to gain full transparency with regards to the feedback that is written and monitor the location & time of any study sessions that occur outside the student’s home.

Supplementary Material:

Each tutor is given additional practice questions and exams to help support the teacher’s class and homework
